Intern
FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions about working with an intern at JNM Wellness!

What is an intern psychotherapist?

Psychotherapy interns work under clinical supervision at JNM Wellness.  Interns are in the final stages of completing their Master's degree and finalizing their training in the field.  They have experience with providing psychotherapy and are registered practitioners, but are still accumulating the clinical hours required for independent practice.  Interns files are overseen by a clinical supervisor to ensure the best client care.

How much experience do interns have?

The answer to this question varies depending on the background of the intern, but all interns have completed the necessary coursework, training, and experiential learning before they can begin their practicum at JNM Wellness.  This includes psychotherapy practice as part of their training program. Interns complete two semesters at JNM Wellness and will have different experience levels depending of the stage of practicum they are in.  Many also enter the field from parallel professions, giving them a wealth of knowledge and skills to draw upon.

All interns must meet the requirements set out by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) to become registered as qualifying psychotherapists before they begin working at our clinic.

What does it mean to practice under supervision?

All psychotherapists must initially practice under supervision until they meet the requirements for independent practice.  This applies to both interns and other newly registered professionals.  This process normally takes a few years as the therapist gathers the required hours of clinical practice and supervision.  JNM Wellness interns practice under the supervision of a more senior psychotherapist within the team.  This supervisor oversees your case and reviews your clinical documentation, providing guidance and support to the intern therapist when necessary.

What fee do interns charge?

Because they are less experienced, intern fees are lower than our standard fee for psychotherapy.  The typical fee is $100 for individuals and $110 for couples.  We also provide an accessible therapy program with our interns which offers low fee and limited pro bono therapy for individuals who don’t have insurance benefits or the financial means to pay our full fee.  This can be discussed in advance or at any point during your treatment with our administrative team, the intern, and/or their supervisor.

Are interns covered by insurance?

Yes!  If your insurance plan covers psychotherapists, your services with our interns should be reimbursed.  Our interns are registered professionals in their field and are practicing under the supervision of a fully qualified psychotherapist as well.

Please note that we still recommend that all clients confirm coverage of psychotherapy services with their insurance provider before starting treatment.
